Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Youth empowerment programs, particularly skill acquisition initiatives, have been increasingly recognized as a tool for improving political participation among young people in Nigeria. In Fika LGA, Yobe State, youth empowerment programs are designed to equip young individuals with vocational skills, thus enhancing their socio-economic standing and political awareness. These programs aim to reduce unemployment and foster a sense of responsibility and engagement in the democratic process (Mohammed & Tijani, 2024). Skill acquisition programs not only provide economic opportunities but also contribute to political participation by increasing the political consciousness of youth and encouraging them to be active participants in electoral processes. The relationship between youth empowerment and political participation remains under-explored in the context of Yobe State, especially in rural areas like Fika LGA. This study seeks to investigate the impact of skill acquisition programs on youth political involvement, focusing on how these initiatives may lead to a more informed and engaged electorate.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of youth empowerment programs, political participation among youth in Fika LGA remains low, particularly during elections and political campaigns. While skill acquisition programs have made positive contributions in terms of employment, their role in enhancing political participation has not been sufficiently examined. This study aims to assess whether these programs have a measurable impact on increasing political participation among youth in Fika LGA, exploring whether such initiatives also foster a stronger sense of political agency among the beneficiaries.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the impact of skill acquisition programs on the political participation of youth in Fika LGA.
  2. To identify the factors that influence youth engagement in political activities following participation in empowerment programs.
  3. To evaluate the challenges youth face in translating empowerment into political participation in Fika LGA.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do skill acquisition programs influence political participation among youth in Fika LGA?
  2. What are the key factors that drive youth political engagement after attending skill acquisition programs in Fika LGA?
  3. What challenges hinder youth from fully translating empowerment into political participation in Fika LGA?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  1. Youth who participate in skill acquisition programs in Fika LGA are more likely to engage in political activities than those who do not.
  2. Increased access to economic opportunities through youth empowerment programs significantly boosts political participation among young people in Fika LGA.
  3. Socio-cultural barriers and limited access to information hinder the full potential of youth empowerment programs in promoting political participation in Fika LGA.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide valuable insights into the role of youth empowerment programs in enhancing political participation in Fika LGA, which could have wider implications for other regions in Nigeria. By exploring the connection between skill acquisition and political engagement, the study will contribute to the development of more effective youth policies and initiatives aimed at increasing political participation and youth inclusion in governance.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the youth empowerment initiatives, specifically skill acquisition programs, within Fika LGA, Yobe State. It will examine how these programs influence youth political participation in the context of local elections. Limitations include challenges related to sample size, accessibility of participants, and the reliability of self-reported data on political participation.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

  1. Youth Empowerment: The process of providing young people with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to actively participate in society and the economy.
  2. Political Participation: The involvement of individuals in activities such as voting, campaigning, attending political rallies, and engaging in political discourse.
  3. Skill Acquisition Programs: Training and educational initiatives aimed at providing young people with technical and vocational skills to improve their employability and economic prospects.
